Sambalpur: The authorities of Hirakud Dam in Odisha’s Sambalpur district opened two more sluice gates as the water level of the reservoir kept rising on Friday evening.
According to official sources, the water level of the dam’s reservoir went up due to heavy rains in the upper catchment area of the Mahanadi river. The authorities had to open two more sluice gates of the reservoir to discharge the floodwater.
More than 3,00,000 cusec of floodwater was being discharged from 20 (Left-13 + Right-7) of the 64 sluice gates of the reservoir, whose water level stood at 628.12 ft against the optimum level of 630 ft in morning.
With the opening two more sluice gates, total 22 gates of the reservoir have been opened in the last three days.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the well-marked low pressure area has moved to East Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood. Under its influence, heavy rain may continue to lash Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts.
