2 Women Die, 3 Critical In Lightning Strikes In Odisha’s Sundaragada


Bhubaneswar: Two women died and three others were critically injured in lightning strikes as rain and thunderstorms lashed Balishankara under Talsara police limits in Odisha’s Sundaragada district at around 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as Champa Tirkey and Susheela Tirkey.

According to sources, the incident took place when a group of workers, who had come from Chhattisgarh, were engaged in transplanting paddy saplings at Chandnimall village in Balisankara block. The injured workers were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

With a low-pressure area brewing over northwest Bay of Bengal, the IMD has warned of moderate thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph, are expected across the state from August 11-15. Very heavy rain has also resumed in Odisha and is likely to continue till August 13.
