Bhubaneswar: Two women sustained burn injuries after their sarees caught fire while lighting lamps during Shivratri at 2 different temples in Odisha’s Ganjam and Puri districts on Saturday.
In the first incident, the woman devotee, identified as Sunita Patra of Aska, along with her family had gone to offer puja at Pudubeswar temple in the town on Shivratri at around 8 pm. As part of the traditions, they offered the puja to the deity and lighted the lamps.
Meanwhile, the saree of Sunjta caught fire from one of the lamps inside the temple. As she was engulfed by the fire, others present there managed to douse it with water. But her entire body had been burnt by the time.
They rushed her to a hospital in Aska. Later, she was shifted to a private hospital by her family. She has sustained 40% burn injuries, hospital sources said.
The second incident took place in Amaresh temple at Charichhak near Konark in Puri district a little later. The woman, identified as Rina Bhoi of Binispur in the district, was injured after her saree caught fire from a lamp inside the temple. She was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital at Cuttack. Her condition was stated to be serious, the sources said.
