Jagatsinghpur: President of the Congress block unit Manas Kumar Rath has been sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment in a cheque bounce case.
Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jagatsinghpur, Nilima Panda also slapped a fine of Rs 3 lakh on him.
According to sources, Rath borrowed Rs 2 lakh from a colleague, Sanjay Kumar Behera, on August 20,2020 and promised to repay it within a month. He, however, did not return the amount even after a year. He then issued a cheque to Behera in 2021 but it was returned due to insufficient funds in the former’s account.
Following which, Behera filed a petition in the local court seeking compensation for the bounced cheque.
