Bhubaneswar: More than 200 children are taking part in the two-day All Odisha School Chess Championship which got underway at Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA) campus here on Friday.
Children in the age group of 5 to 15 from across Odisha will vie for glory in the championship which is being organised by All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA) in association with SOA, and offers a prize money of Rs 1 lakh.
SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda, who was chief guest at the inaugural function, said the championship aims to popularise chess in the state at a time when the sport was witnessing emergence of new talents in India.
International arbiter, AOCA Suresh Chandra Sahoo, AOCA secretary Debabrata Bhatta, AOCA treasurer Shankar Mishra and SOA’s Dean (Students’ Welfare) Prof. Jyoti Ranjan Das also spoke during the inaugural function.
