Berhampur: Even as the State Government is strictly enforcing ban on sale of liquor as per the guidelines for preventing spread of coronavirus, smuggling of illicit liquor continues unabated. In the latest case, 2,000 litre of illicit liquor was seized in Ganjam district.
According to Rambha police, a tractor was intercepted on suspicion and the illicit liquor was found packed in small polythene pouches in gunny bags. The IIC of the police station, KC Sethi said eight persons from villages along the banks of Chilika lake in Ganjam and Puri districts were arrested in this connection.
The liquor was brought to Guhariapata on the banks of Chilika for transportation to Puri district by boats.
On May 13, over 1,000 litre of illicit liquor was seized under the same police station while being transported on a boat in Chilika lake. Six persons were arrested.
On Sunday, raids by the Aska, Dharakote and Gangapur Police Stations led to the seizure of 1,282 litre of illicit liquor. Police also destroyed 11,650 kgs of molasses and arrested 12 persons.
