New Delhi: Remember Joginder Sharma?
Yes, he was the man with golden arm who sealed Team India’s 2007 T20 World Cup title triumph by dismissing Pakistan batsman Misbah-ul-Haq in the last over.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police in Haryana, the 40-year-old Joginder is in trouble. He is among six persons accused in a suicide case.
They have been named in an FIR registered by Haryana Police for abetment to suicide.
Hisar resident Pawan hanged himself on January 1 over a property dispute. His mother Sunita filed a police complaint claiming that a property-related case was pending trial in court.
She accused Joginder and five others of harassing her son, which led to his suicide.
Before taking him for cremation, Pawan’s family members staged a protest with his body, demanding the arrest of the accused under Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Their other demands included financial assistance to the family and a fair probe in the case.
According to a senior police official, the accused have been charged with abetment of suicide and the SC/ST section can be added only after investigation.
Joginder denied any involvement in the case.
“I am not aware of this case. I don’t know Pawan and have never met him,” said the former medium-pacer who played 4 ODIS and 4 T20 Internationals for India.
