Mumbai: Nearly 22 people have been killed and over 35 injured in a stampede on a foot overbridge at Parel Railway Station that connects Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations in Mumbai on Friday morning.
The incident took place around 10.30 am near a ticket window on the bridge, where commuters had taken shelter from heavy rain. Four trains came at the same time and as the commuters rushed to board them, some slipped leading to the stampede. There was a rumour of the bridge falling that reportedly prompted the panic rush.
The injured have been rushed to KEM Hospital and a team of doctors has also been stationed at the spot.
In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Railway Minister Piyush Goyal is ensuring all assistance.
“A probe has been ordered. We are mulling ex-gratia for the relatives of deceased and injured,” said MoS Railway Manoj Sinha.
Meanwhile, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to kin of those dead. An inquiry will be conducted by Maharashtra government and necessary action taken, he added.
On the other hand, Shiv Sena leader Sada Sarvankar has demanded resignation of Goyal over the incident.
