223 Karnataka MLAs Worth More Than Combined Assets Of Legislators Of 21 States, Including Odisha

Bhubaneswar: While the total average assets of 113 BJD MLAs of Odisha is Rs 4 crore, 223 MLAs in Karnataka own assets worth over Rs 14 crore, which is more than the individual annual budgets 2023-24 of Mizoram & Sikkim, according to an Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch report.

The total assets for 223 MLAs analysed from Karnataka is Rs 14,359 crore, followed by 284 MLAs from Maharashtra at Rs 6,679 crore and 174 MLAs from Andhra Pradesh at Rs 4,914 crore.

The average assets owned by Karnataka MLAs is 26% of Rs 54,545 crore combined assets of all sitting MLAs. It is also more than the combined assets of sitting MLAs from Rajasthan, Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Goa, Meghalaya, Odisha, Assam, Nagaland, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Puducherry, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. The total combined assets of sitting MLAs from these 21 States & UTs is Rs 13,976 crore.

MLAs of Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur have the lowest total assets. “The total assets of 59 MLAs from Tripura is Rs 90 crore, followed by 40 MLAs – Rs 190 crore and 60 MLAs from Manipur – Rs 225 crore.”

It further said that 1356 BJP MLAs analysed have average assets worth Rs. 11.97 crore, 719 INC MLA – Rs 21.97 crore, 161 AAP MLAs – Rs 10.20 crore and 146 YSRCP MLAs –  Rs 23.14 crore.

According to a previous ADR report, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president and the state’s deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar is the richest MLA in the country with assets worth Rs 1,413 crore. As many as 12 legislators from Karnataka also feature among the 20 richest MLAs in the country, and 14% of the MLAs from this southern state are billionaires (worth Rs 100 crore), the highest in the country, and the average assets of the legislators is Rs 64. 3 crore.

However, none from Odisha figure in the billionaire list. Independent MLA from Rayagada  Makaranda Muduli is among the 10 MLAs in the country with lowest assets. With Rs 15,000 movable assets, he is second from the bottom on the list,
