Baripada: Police have seized 23 country-made guns from different places inside Similipal Tiger Reserve in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj in the last 2 months.
Revealing this at a presser in Baripada on Friday, Mayurbhanj SP S Sushree said they had launched a special drive to crack down on illegal arms in the tiger reserve area two months back. The drive aimed at stopping poaching of wild animals and their smuggling in the area.
“During the drive, the teams from 9 police stations in the district have seized 23 country-made guns during raids on the villages inside the reserve forest. Besides, 8 persons have been arrested for possession of illegal arms and 16 cases registered in this regard,” she said.
One gun has been seized each by the teams of Baripada Sadar police station, Karanjia, Jashipur, Thakurmunda and Sarat. Similarly, Badasahi police have seized 3 guns, Udala 5, Kunta 8 and Kaptipada 2 guns during the drive, the SP said.
