Bhubaneswar: As many as 24 minor girls staying in residential schools in Odisha were reported to have become pregnant during the last two years, the state Assembly was informed on Friday.
The information was shared by School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond while replying a question by Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati.
While nine such cases were reported during 2024-25 academic year, the number of pregnancies rose to 15 during 2025-26, the Minister said.
Of the nine cases reported in 2024-25, one each was reported from Baleshwar, Debagada, Kendujhar, Koraput, Malkangiri and Mayurbhanj, while three cases were reported from Rayagada.
During 2025-26, five cases were reported from Kandhamala, four from Koraput and one each from Debagada, Kendujhar, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada and Sundaragada, he said.
The Minister further informed the House that action had been taken against the accused persons in the cases. Some of the accused were arrested, while FIRs were registered in other cases, he said.
