Rourkela: As many as 25 persons were detained for allegedly ransacking a police vehicle at Baneilata village under Hatibari police limits in Sundargarh district on Sunday night.
According to sources, a team of Hatibari police had gone to Baneilata village to conduct a raid on a warrantee’s house. A scuffle ensued between the cops and the agitators when the former tried to enter the house of the accused.
The situation soon took an ugly turn when the agitators started ransacking the police vehicle and later detained seven officials for more than three hours.
Receiving information about the incident, a police team rushed to the spot and rescued the police personnel.
The warrantee is yet to be arrested. The detainees are being questioned, police sources informed.
A similar incident was also reported from Dahikhia in Puri district on May 2 after a group of locals allegedly thrashed some police personnel for conducting raid on a liquor trader’s house.
The officials of Kakatpur police station had gone to raid the house of a person, engaged in illegal liquor trade, at Kendrapati village in the district. However, the police team could not find the liquor seller in his house.
While returning, the cops were waylaid by a mob, who staged a blockade on Astaranga-Kakatpur road by burning tyres. Later, a clash ensued between the cops and the agitators after the former tried to pacify them.
Three police personnel had sustained injuries in the attack.
