26/11-Type Attack Plot Exposed Ahead Of G20 Meet In Kashmir, Plans Tweaked

Srinagar: The itinerary of a G20 Tourism Working Group (TWG) conference in Kashmir had to be tweaked at the eleventh hour for serious security concerns.

Security forces in Jammu & Kashmir suspected terrorist organisations were planning a 26/11-type attack during the G20 conference in Gulmarg at the behest of Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, India Today reported quoting sources.

The itinerary for the conference – scheduled from May 22 to 24 — was changed following revelations by a detained over-ground worker (OGW), who worked in a posh hotel.

Security around the G20 venue has been beefed up, while Kashmir Police issued an advisory stating that suspicious international mobile numbers are being used to spread rumours about the G20 meeting in Kashmir.

About three weeks ago, security forces arrested Farooq Ahmad Wani, suspected to be an OGW –people who help terrorists with logistical support, cash, shelter and other infrastructure with which armed groups and insurgency movements like Hizb-ul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Muhammad can operate and thrive in Jammu & Kashmir.

Wani, a resident of Haigam Sopore in Baramulla, worked as driver at a reputed five-star hotel in Gulmarg. He was allegedly associated with terror organisations and also in direct contact with ISI officials across the border.

Wani reportedly revealed during questioning that the terrorists were aiming to enter the hotel and target guests, including foreign dignitaries – just like the way terrorists had barged in, opened fire and took hostages at Taj Hotel during the Mumbai attack on November 26, 2008.

The OGW further said the terrorists are preparing to attack two or three places simultaneously during the G20 conference in Kashmir.

All movements across Kashmir, particularly in Srinagar, are being monitored by CCTV and drones, the sources added.
