Kanhangad: A 27-year-old student from Odisha, pursuing PhD from the Central University of Kerala (CUK), was found dead in the hostel on Tuesday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as Rubi Patel of Ruchida village in Bargarh district. She was a student of Hindi and Comparative Literature.
According to reports, she was found hanging in the bathroom on the second floor of CUK’s Nila Hostel around 11.30 am. Though she was rushed to the hospital, she could not be saved. Her body is kept in the mortuary at the district hospital in Kanhangad, Manorama Online reported.
Bekal police have registered a case of unnatural death under CrPC 174.
While university officials and her classmates were clueless about the reason for the death, SFI and ABVP students alleged that the research scholar ended her life due to mental pressure. They also staged a protest, demanding the appointment of a psychiatrist on campus.
