Bhubaneswar: In a significant finding, 274 fully vaccinated persons in Odisha tested COVID positive 14 days after receiving both doses.
Nasopharyngeal swab and serum samples were collected from them and referred to the Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC), Bhubaneswar.
Among the 274 cases, 83.2% of individuals were found to be symptomatic and 9.9% required hospitalization.
The seropositivity in people who received Covishield was 96.7% — significantly higher than in Covaxin (77.1%).
Median duration of complete vaccination and rt-PCR positivity was 44.5 days. The median spike RBD IgG titre values for Covaxin and Covishield recipients were 213.5 AU/ml (IQR: 537.5) and 647.5 AU/ml (IQR: 1645.1) respectively.
Hospitalized patients were found to have less median antibody titers than individuals in home isolation.
The study attempted to record breakthrough cases reported through passive and voluntary reporting at various healthcare facilities from different districts of Odisha, their clinical presentation, requirement of hospitalization post infection and antibody titre against spike antigen.
A vaccine breakthrough infection is defined as the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA or antigen in a respiratory specimen collected from a person 14 or more days after receiving all recommended doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine.
