2nd Test Vs England: Yashasvi Jaiswal Smashes Career-Best 179* But Others Throw It Away

Visakhapatnam: It was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s day at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium here on Friday.

The 22-year-old left-handed opener batted throughout the opening day of the second Test to remain unbeaten on a brilliant 179 as Team India reached 336/6.

Yashasvi showed the ideal application and temperament for a Test match, defending solidly and unfurling the big shots whenever the opportunity came. He has so far struck 17 fours and 5 sixes in his 257-ball knock.

It was Yashasvi’s second Test ton, and highest score in his six-Test career. His previous best Test score was 171, in his debut match against the West Indies in July 2023.

Yashasvi got to his hundred with a six off Tom Hartley. Watch that moment in the video clip shared by BCCI on X:

Yashasvi’s more experienced teammates, however, disappointed after Rohit Sharma won a good toss on a decent first-day track.

Every batter got a start before throwing it away.

Rohit Sharma was caught at backward short-leg off debutant Shoaib Bashir for 14 after a 40-run opening stand. Shubman Gill (34) looked set for a big score before being outsmarted by wily pacer James Anderson and being caught behind by Ben Foakes.

Shreyas Iyer (27) played the second fiddle to Yashasvi in a 90-run partnership before under-edging an attempted cut to Foakes.

Rajat Patidar impressed on debut and reached 32 but played on to leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed.

Axar Patel (32) and KS Bharat (17) looked at ease against a tiring, adding 52 runs for the fifth wicket before both fell in the closing stages of Day 1.

Brief scores: India 336/6 (Yashasvi Jaiswal 179*, Shubman Gill 34, Axar Patel 32; Rehan Ahmed 2/61, Shoaib Bashir 2/100).

Match to continue on Day 2.
