Cuttack: Badambadi police on Monday arrested three accomplices of notorious criminal Shakeel from Cuttack. They are accused of extortion from a businessman who had brought a plot of land near Kesharpur area in Cuttack.
The arrested trio has been identified as Wasim Khan, Rajesh and Mohammad Sahajahan. Police have seized four mobile phones, Rs 10,000 in cash and a debit card from them.
The businessman, who runs a hotel, had bought the land in December 2019. When construction started, he received a phone call from a man who identified himself as Shakil and asked for a payment of Rs 2 lakh, failing which he wouldn’t be allowed to go ahead with the construction work.
Later, the the three accused came to the spot and threatened the businessman, making him speak to Shakil again over phone, Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh informed.
Based on the complainant’s FIR, a police team and special squad carried out a raid to nab the criminals.
“The three have confessed that they are accomplices of local anti-social Shakeel and that they were working under his directions,” said the DCP.
