Bhubaneswar: It was a chase straight out of movies as the Special Crime Unit of the Commissionerate police gave a hot pursuit and nabbed three ganja smugglers, all residents of Jharkhand, on Bhubaneswar outskirts.
Around 300 kg ganja worth Rs 30 lakh was also seized from their possession.
Addressing a presser, Commissioner of Police Sanjeeb Panda on Monday said that the criminals had put up ‘Press’ stickers on their vehicles to evade suspicion. “An attempt was made to stop the smugglers travelling in an expensive car at Pitapalli and they were finally nabbed after a chase of 30 km near Pahala area on Sunday,” he said.
The CP further said the gang had modified the vehicles and created special chambers to stash ganja packets. “The inter-state peddlers had procured Ganja from Malkangiri and the consignment was meant for Kolkata,” he said.
Panda identified the main accused as Ravi Shankar Das, who was involved in the illegal narcotics trade and arrested in the past. “We have contacted our Jharkhand counterparts to collect more information regarding his involvement in other crimes,” he added.
