Berhampur: Three girls died while 15 others were injured when a speeded SUV crashed into wedding revellers at Mandiapalli under Gopalpur police limits in Odisha’s Ganjam district late on Tuesday.
Police have identified the deceased as Swapna Reddy (22), Manju Reddy (23) and Bharati Reddy (12) of Kesab Nagar at Lanjipalli in Berhampur. All the injured were admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here. Two among them were later shifted to Visakhapatnam in critical condition.
According to sources, the accident took place when 50 members from the bride’s side were standing on the road to receive the bridegroom around 1 am. The SUV was moving at a speed of around 110 to 120 km per hour and the driver, who allegedly was in an inebriated state, rammed into the verandah of a house in Mandiapali village.
While the irate villagers apprehended one person travelling in the SUV, the driver managed to escape.
The deceased had gone to attend the marriage last night.
Police are investigating the case.
