Bhubaneswar: Three western disturbances are likely to bring more rain to Odisha in the next two weeks, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

A fresh spell of rainfall and thunderstorm and hailstorm activity may commence during March 26-28. The regional centre in Bhubaneswar has already issued yellow warning for thunderstorm/lightning and squall for two days from March 26. The state may witness similar weather conditions with likely hailstorm from March 30 to April 2 and April 2 to April 4 again. North and coastal districts of the state are likely to be affected, sources said.

On March 26, thunderstorm with lightning and gusty surface wind reaching 30- 40 kmph is likely to occur at one or two places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak. Light to moderate rain or thundershower is also likely at a few places in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Boudh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore and Bhadrak and at one or two places in rest of Odisha during this period.

Some places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Dhenkanal are likely to be hit by thunderstorm, lightning and squall the following day while some places in coastal Odisha, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Koraput and one or two places in remaining districts may also experience light to moderate rain, it said.

Umashankar Das, senior scientist of regional centre here, had earlier informed about the probability of another western disturbance in India on March 23. “Rainfall accompanied by hailstorms and thunderstorm coupled with the gusty surface wind will start from March 23 night and will reach Odisha by March 25,” he had said.

According to IMD’s extended range forecast, two fresh active western disturbance ( one from March 30 to April 2 and another from April 2 to April 4) and their associated induced cyclonic circulations may trigger thunderstorm/hailstorm/lightning in eastern India, during many days of the week.

“Due to likely thunderstorm with rainfall activity over north and parts of central and Peninsular India during many days in the week, maximum temperatures are very likely to be below normal over most parts of the country during most days of the week,” it added.

CHECK FORECAST FOR ODISHA

MARCH 31- APRIL 6

Isolated to scattered rain/thunderstorm activity is very likely in week-2.
