Koraput: Three women were killed in a landslide while they were engaged in stone-cutting in a hill in Odisha’s Koraput district on Saturday.
According to sources, 10 villagers including 2 men and 8 women from Salmanguda village under Koraput Town police station had gone to Matikhala Murram hill near Kolab dam in the district to cut stones. While they were engaged in the work, a large chunk of stone along with debris broke off from the hill and fell on them.
Following the landslide, NDRF team, fire brigade team and police rushed to the spot. They with the help of other villagers brought three women from under the debris. While two women were already dead, another was critically injured.
The deceased were identified as Purni Jani and Sanmati Jani of the village. The injured villager, Champa Badnayak, was rushed to the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Koraput. But she succumbed during the treatment.
District sub-collector and local MLA also went to the spot and supervised the rescue operation. Police have registered a case and started investigation.
