Cuttack: Three youths drowned and one was rescued from an overflowing canal in Odisha’s Cuttack district.
According to sources, the incident occurred when four friends were returning home late Wednesday night after watching Jatra (open air theatre) in Choudwar.
As they approached Belamalia temple near Jagatpur, one of them fell into Pattamundai canal. The other three friends jumped into the canal to rescue him. But all of them were carried away by a strong current in the overflowing canal.
Later, one of them managed to swim back to the bank of the canal and alerted the locals. On being informed, a team from Jagatpur police station, ODRAF and fire personnel went to the spot and started a search operation. While they did not find the three youths, the operation was called off due to the darkness.
On Thursday morning, they again started the search and found the bodies of the missing youths. One of them has been identified as Trilochan Mahala of Talasahi under Chauliaganj police limits, while the identity of the rest three has not been confirmed, police sources said.
A case of unnatural death has been registered at Jagatpur police station and further investigation is on.
