34 Dead In Uttarakhand Rains, PM Offers All Possible Help

New Delhi: The death toll due to heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand has gone up to at least 34 people. Incessant rainfall in Uttarakhand entered the third day on Tuesday.  Authorities fear that many lives may be trapped under debris and in flooded areas.

“Prime Minister and Home Minister have been briefed on the situation. Houses, bridges etc. have been damaged. Three (Army) helicopters to be deployed for rescue operations,” Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

“So far 34 people have died and five are missing. ₹ 4 lakh compensation will be given to the families of the deceased. Those who lost their houses will be given ₹ 1.9 lakh. All possible help to be extended to those who lost their livestock,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Uttarakhand CM and took cognizance of the damage caused by the rainfall and discussed the relief and rescue work. According to a statement issued by the state government, PM Modi assured that the Centre will provide all required help and assistance.

Meanwhile, the weather department has indicated a “significant reduction in rainfall activity over Uttarakhand from today”, predicting “isolated to scattered” showers.

Notably, Nainital is cut off with all three access roads blocked by landslides.

Apart from the state and national disaster response forces, the Army has also been called to action, with three Army helicopters set to join rescue and relief efforts.
