Who could have thought that writer Salim Khan’s lean son with bulging eyes, who debuted in a supporting role in ‘Biwi Ho Toh Aisi’ would end up becoming the film industry’s Bhai 34 years later?
A year after his debut, he landed the lead role in ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ in 1989, becoming an overnight sensation. He went on to deliver blockbusters such as ‘Baaghi’, ‘Sanam Bewafa’ and ‘Saajan’. Soon, he became a favourite in the industry. However, the initial success gave way to a string of flops. But then along came ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun?’ and ‘Karan Arjun’. Salman Khan became a shirtless sensation in the song ‘O o jaane jana..’ from the film ‘Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya’.
The years 1996-1999 are considered one of the best phases of Khan’s career, with 8 of his 13 films becoming box office hits. There were others like ‘Tere Naam’, ‘Salaam-E-Ishq’, ‘Garv’, ‘Lucky – No Time for Love’, ‘Wanted’, and ‘Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya.’
‘Wanted’ turned out to be a game changer in the type of movies that Salman was to do later. His peak era began once again in 2010 with ‘Dabangg’ after which all of his movies in which he played the lead did Rs 100 cr+ business at the box office. Between 2010 and 2019, Salman Khan delivered 9 major blockbusters, becoming the only actor after Rajesh Khanna to achieve this level of success.
