4 Arrested In Bhubaneswar Café Sword Attack; Mastermind ‘Bunty’ Still At Large

Bhubaneswar: Police have arrested four persons and detained three others in connection with Monday late night’s violence outside a café at Patrapada under Tamando police limits in Bhubaneswar.

The arrested have been identified as Priyabrata Nayak, Soumyaranjan Behera, Subham Benera and Sumranshu Das. While Priyabrata spent nine months in jail in Nayapalli rape case, Soumyaranjan is also out on bail in connection with a case under Kandhagiri police limits, sources said, adding that CCTV footage of the attack led to the arrests.

Those arrested and detained have reportedly identified one Bunty as the

mastermind behind the attack, which is being attributed to political rivalry.

The attack unfolded around 11.50 pm when six men arrived on three motorcycles and suddenly attacked four individuals chatting outside the eatery with swords. As the victims scrambled to safety, the perpetrators turned their aggression toward three cars parked outside the café’s before fleeing the scene. Two men were injured and three cars were damaged in the incident.

The café owner, Kabiraj Lenka, filed a complaint with Tamando police the following morning, identifying a local resident as the primary suspect. As his son and friends, who were inside the café, locked the doors to prevent entry, the attackers shifted focus to bystanders and damaged vehicles parked nearby, he added.

CCTV footage from the location captured the gang brandishing weapons and carrying out the assault, providing crucial evidence for police.

A special squad of Bhubaneswar police have launched a manhunt to nab Bunty, the sources added.
