Bhubaneswar: Four hardcore criminals of a notorious inter-state gang involved in around 70 cases in Odisha have been arrested by the Commissionerate Police and many stolen articles seized from them.
Investigating a series of gold chain snatching cases in the state capital, the commissionerate police successfully busted the well organised inter-state gang involved in the crime. A special squad arrested four members of the gang, Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh said.
The gang, known as “Irani Gang”, has spread its network from Karnatak to Odisha, Andhra, Madhya Pradesh and other states, he said
The gang members, involved in over 22 criminal cases in Bhubaneswar alone, used to adopt new techniques to loot cash and other valuables from people, the DCP said.
They are also involved in around 50 criminal cases outside Bhubaneswar as they have been active in places like Puri, Cuttack, Bhadrak and Jajpur, he said.
This gang members avoid staying at any place for a long time and leave a city after executing the loot.
Five motorcycles, 17 gold chains and other articles have been seized from their possession. Further investigation is in progress.
The criminals often targeted people at major events and marriage functions by posing as guests and police officials and looted valuables including gifts.
The gang members also used to steal cash from cash counters of major shops and commercial centers by diverting the attention of the staff or by using other tricks.
