Mumbai: ‘Masoom’ was one film which touched the hearts of moviegoers of all ages.
Those who had craved for a sequel will have their wish fulfilled after decades-long wait.
Forty-one years after the release of Shekhar Kapur’s iconic movie, the filmmaker has announced that he will start shooting for the sequel early next year.
Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah, whose performances in the 1983 film left a lasting impact, will return in ‘Masoom 2’. Another powerful actor will be joining them — none other than Manoj Bajpayee.
Sharing the exciting news during a press conference in New Delhi, ahead of the 55th International Film Festival of India in Goa, Kapur informed that he will start shooting for ‘Masoom 2’ in February-March 2025.
The acclaimed director also shared how he had ‘lost’ the script.
“The script is ready… In fact, I was flying in from Dubai yesterday and I left the script behind on my seat,” he revealed.
A flight attendant returned it to Kapur with a heartfelt note, reminding the director of the film’s unique place in Indian cinema.
“A script that was lost comes back… it’s something predestined,” Kapur remarked.
Now 78, the maker of other acclaimed films like ‘Mr India’, ‘Bandit Queen’ and ‘Elizabeth’, said the Masoom sequel will introduce a fresh storyline, but will uphold the same cherished values.
Kapur had earlier said that Kaveri, her daughter with Suchitra Krishnamoorthi, will make her acting debut with ‘Masoom 2’.
Kapur also expressed the wish to re-release ‘Masoom’ in theatres to remind younger audiences of the film’s enduring legacy.
Naseeruddin and Shabana apart, ‘Masoom’ featured Tanuja, Supriya Pathak, Saeed Jaffrey, along with young Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Matondkar.
The film explored deep emotional complexities of family relationships, betrayal and forgiveness.
