Bhopal: A fire swept through a government hospital here late Monday night, killing four newborns.
The incident took place at the Kamala Nehru Children’s Hospital. “Four children died in the fire that broke out in the special newborn care unit (SNCU) ward probably due to a short circuit,” state Medical Education Minister Vishwas Sarang said.
Firefighters were able to save 36 babies.
The blaze started on the third-floor of the hospital at around 9 pm. Firefighters took three hours to douse the blaze.
Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed his grief over the deaths.
“High-level enquiry has been ordered. Mohammad Suleman, Additional Chief Secretary, Health, will conduct the enquiry,” he tweeted.
He announced a compensation of ₹4 lakh for the family members of the victims.
