Rayagada: Amid the spike in COVID cases, 49 students of MITS Engineering College in Odisha’s Rayagada tested positive for the virus on Monday.
According to sources, 5 students of the college had tested positive for the virus on January 7. Following this, random COVID tests were conducted and 49 more were found infected, taking the tally to 54.
“COVID cases are rising in the district and students have been found infected in a private college. To check the spread of the virus, the college’s Hostel A and B have been declared as micro containment zones and the premises has been sealed,” said Rayagada Collector Saroj Kumar Mishra.
All the infected students have been kept in isolation at the hostel and necessary medical assistance is being provided by the district administration, he said.
The contact tracing of those infected have also started and college premises is being sanitised, he added.
Notably, Rayagada saw a sudden spike in COVID cases on Monday with 82 people testing positive for the virus in the last 24 hours against 31 the previous day. The district now has 184 active cases.
