Kendrapara: Rajnagar police in Kendrapara district on Sunday arrested five youths for allegedly circulating objectionable pictures of a girl student on social media.
However, the prime accused in the case is yet to be nabbed, police sources said.
According to available information, a group of six-seven youths accosted the girl at Pentha sea beach, where she had gone with her male friend on June 14. They allegedly misbehaved with them. When her friend objected to their behaviour, the youths thrashed him and tore her clothes apart. They then took away their vehicle and mobile phones.
A complaint in this regard was lodged by the victim at Rajnagar police station after pictures of the incident went viral on Saturday, sources added.
On November 7, last year, a girl had allegedly committed suicide in the district after she found her obscene photos on Facebook.
On November 22 the same year, Director General of Police (DGP) R P Sharma had directed SPs to identify and arrest the perpetrators indulging in such crimes.
The advisory asked people not to indulge in taking pictures or videos of intimate moments or of private acts as it amounts to voyeurism and attracts minimum imprisonment for one year, which may extend to three years
