Berhampur: Baidyanathpur Police on Wednesday arrested five persons in connection with the alleged gang rape of a Class XII girl in Odisha’s Berhampur.
They have been identified as Rutun Kumar Dash (22), Rudra Jena (21), Abhilash Polai (19), Akash Nayak (26) and Sambit Panigrahi.
According to police sources, the incident took place on May 3 when Rutun invited her to his house while she was waiting for her father near Hilpatna after meeting a friend. He went with him and realised that it was a bachelors’ mess. He then told her that he would call his mother and gave her something to drink, following which lost control over her senses and was sexually assaulted by 5-6 persons till 10 pm.
Later, Rutun and one of his friend dropped her a Santoshima Sai Bijipur where her friends were waiting for her. He also warned her with dire consequences if she told anyone about it.
The matter came to light on May 5 after the survivor lodged a complaint with police. “The boy was an acquittance and he called his friends on the plea of calling his mother. He had spiked her drink,” informed Berhampur SP Sarthak Sarangi.
He said that they were sent for medical examination and the girl’s statement was also recorded before a magistrate. “They were arrested on basis of prima facie evidence and their confession,” he added.
The five have been booked under Sections 376(D)/328/ 120(B)/506 of IPC and Section 6 of POCSO Act.
