Cuttack: In a major success against organised crime, police arrested five members of a hardcore criminal gang involved in illegal arms trade and seized several weapons from them in Odisha’s Cuttack city on Wednesday.
The five were caught after the police launched a special operation. Three 9 mm pistols, a 7.65 mm pistol, one 8 mm country-made pistol and around 50 ammunition have been seized from the arrested persons, Cuttack DCP Pinak Mishra said.
This apart, the police have also seized a four-wheeler vehicle, two two-wheelers and six mobile phones from the arrested.
Those arrested have been identified as Bapi Jena alias Kalia of Madhupatna, Durga Das Nanda of Jagatsinghpur, Muhammad Rahim, Sheikh Washim and Asiq Samal.
All the five are habitual offenders and they have been booked in several cases of crime at different police stations in Cuttack city and nearby areas, he said.
Muhammad Rahim and Sheikh Washim are stated to have links with Dhalasamanta brothers’ gang.
Stating that a close watch is maintained on the activities of habitual offenders, the DCP said that movements of dreaded criminals and those involved in illegal arms trade in Cuttack and nearby areas are being tracked.
