Berhampur: A day after being allegedly abducted by a group from Andhra Pradesh, five fishermen of Odisha were rescued from Bhabunipadu coastal area in the neighbouring state on Saturday.
The rescued fishermen, who belong to Arjayapalli area in Odisha’s Ganjam district, had been illegally detained in Babunipadu in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, sources said.
Around 20 fishermen from Arjayapalli area were fishing in mid-sea off Ganjam coast on Friday when a trawler from Andhra Pradesh allegedly entered the ‘no fishing zone’. The occupants of the trawler entered into a fight with the fishermen from Odisha in mid-sea.
Following a heated argument, the fishermen from Andhra Pradesh allegedly threatened those from Odisha and forcibly detained five of them. While the five were taken to Babunipadu in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh, the rest managed to return. They lodged a complaint at Arjayapalli police station regarding the incident.
Following their complaint, the Arjyapalli police swung into action and rescued the five fishermen from Bhabunipadu area. All the fishermen are safe.
