Moscow: A series of powerful earthquakes struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, situated in Russia’s far east, on Sunday.
However, the other quakes did not trigger any tsunami alert.
The first quake, of 7.4 magnitude, hit at 8.50 pm local time (2.20 pm IST) at a depth of 10 kilometres.
It prompted the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to issue a warning that “hazardous tsunami waves are possible” within 300 kilometres (186 miles) of the epicentre, located in the Pacific Ocean, near the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
Video clips of tremors were shared on social media.

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) initially reported the earthquake as a 6.7 magnitude tremor. However, the USGS and European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) upgraded it to 7.4 magnitude.
It was followed by four quakes, within an hour. According to USGS, all subsequent tremors, east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, were at depths of around 10 kilometres. They measured 6.6, 6.7, 6.7 and 7.
The subsequent tremors did not trigger any tsunami alert.
The initial tsunami alert was lifted after a the first earthquake did not result in deadly waves, according to the Russian Emergencies ministry.
