Malkangiri: At least six labourers were reportedly killed and seven others critically injured after a cement-laden tipper truck carrying them overturned on Hantalaguda ghat in Odisha’s Malkangir on Saturday.
As per preliminary information, the tipper carrying over 12 labourers was proceeding to Jodamba from Chitrakonda in the Swabhi9man Anchal of the district when the mishap took place on a hilly road.
The truck reportedly fell into a gorge, leading to the death of five workers at the spot, while another labourer succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at hospital.
Local authorities and emergency services rushed to the accident site and launched rescue operation. While the bodies were recovered from the site, the injured workers were sent to hospital for treatment.
Expressing grief over the death of laborers in the road mishap, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased wokers. The CM extended his deep sympathies to the bereaved family members.
The Chief Minister while ordering for free treatment of the injured in the accident, has wished for their speedy recovery.
All the labourers who were killed and injured in the accident were reported to be from Kosagumuda area of Nabarangpur district.
