50 Doctors Die In A Day, 244 In 2nd COVID Wave: IMA

New Delhi: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has revealed that 244 doctors have lost their lives in the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, including 50 in a day.

According to data available with IMA, Dr Anas Mujahid of Delhi government-run GTB Hospital is the youngest casualty.

The 25-year-old junior resident doctor suffered an intracranial haemorrhage soon after testing COVID positive and passed away within hours on May 9.

The oldest doctor to lose his life amid the second wave so far is Dr S Satyamurthy from Vishakhapatnam. The 90-year-old retired as an ENT professor.

Majority of the doctors who have lost the fight against coronavirus were aged above 50, but a considerable number of those were under 45 also.

Looking at the state-wise break-up, the maximum number of fatalities were reported from Bihar (69), followed by Uttar Pradesh (33) and Delhi (26).

According to IMA president Dr JA Jayalal, only 3 per cent of the deceased doctors had been vaccinated.

Last year, an estimated 730 doctors had succumbed to the virus in India as per IMA’s data.
