Panaji: The Maina Curtorim police station of Goa claims to have apprehended the murderers of a resident of Odisha within 12 hours of the crime being reported. Those arrested also belongs to Odisha.
“At 1.35 pm on Sunday, Peter Quadros, panchayat member of Ward 8, V P Raia, reported to the Maina Curtorim police that one Khageswar Sabar (38) has been found murdered at his rented accomodation near Luis Garage, Sonarwaddo, Raia, Salcete. The owner of the rented room is one Hellena Fernandes. The police collected evidence from the place of occurrence. It was learnt that Sabar was originally from Junagarh, Kalahandi, Odisha,” a senior police official said.
It also came to be known that Sabar shared the room with Sashibanta (43) and Rabi Majhi (28). Both originally belonged to Goudchhendia, Junagarh, Kalahandi, Odisha. All three were in Goa to earn a living. The two were absconding. The police immediately launched a manhunt to track them down.
“Realising that the accused would try to make a run for it, three teams were formed. These were deployed at the Margao railway station and KTC Bus Stand. Their phone numbers were also found in the Tenant Verification Forms and technical surveillance began. The first to be apprehended was Sashibanta. He was arrested from near Margao railway station. He was on his way there to get away from Goa,” the official said.
There was no trace of Majhi though. Police teams were deployed across Goa to keep a lookout for anybody matching his description. Finally, information was received that he had been spotted near Bambolim. He was arrested from there. The police came to know that he too was trying to leave Goa.
“Further investigation is in progress to know the motive behind the crime. Authorities in Odisha have also been contacted. The body of the victim will be handed over to his family,” the official added.
