Bhubaneswar: With sweltering heatwave sweeping Odisha, Balasore recorded the highest maximum temperature of 33 degree Celsius by 8.30 am on Thursday, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre tweeted.
The mercury soared above 30 degree Celsius at six places. The other five are Puri (32.2), Bhubaneswar (31.6), Jharsuguda (31), Chandbali (30.8) and Keonjhar (30.4).
Jharsuguda along with Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh at 43 degree Celsius was the hottest in the country the previous day. “The all-time highest day temperature recorded during this month in Jharsuguda was 46.1°C on April 19, 2010,” IMD scientist Umashankar Das said while confirming that Jharsuguda recorded the highest temperature in the country for the day.
These two places were also the hottest across Asia, according to Ogimet, weather information service provider.
The temperature in Jharsuguda was 3 degree above normal. The mercury in Baripada, which recorded 42.5 degree Celsius, was 4 degree Celsius above normal. At least 14 places had recorded temperature at 40 degree Celsius and above, the MeT office said.
The twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack recorded 39.8 degree Celsius.
While the regional centre has issued heatwave warning till 8.30 am on April 16, the day temperature is likely to be more than 40 degree Celsius at several places in the state and expected to remain 3-5 degree Celsius above normal. People have been advised to take precautionary measures while going outside between 11 am and 2 pm.
