Rourkela: In a major crackdown on smuggling, personnel of the Government Railway Police (GRP) seized 60 kg of silver ornaments from a man in Odisha’s Rourkela.
The man, identified as Chandan Kumar, was apprehended while illegally transporting the silver and was handed over to the GST department on Thursday for further investigation as he failed to provide any satisfactory answer.
Sources said the man was reportedly en route from Agra to Ranchi in Jharkhand and had made a brief stopover in Rourkela.
During preliminary probe by the GST department, the man claimed that the silver ornaments were for personal use and purchased through legitimate sources.
A senior GST official stated that Chandan Kumar claimed to have bought about 51 kg of silver in Agra and provided invoices to verify the same.
During stopover in Rourkela, the man reportedly made an additional purchase of some 10 kg of silver biscuits but could not produce an invoice for the same, he said.
There are discrepancies in the invoice slips provided by the man and a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the veracity of the documents.
