Fearing that she had contracted the novel coronavirus, a 60-year-old woman from Phagwara in Punjab committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance, police said.
Santosh Kaur, a resident of Khurampur village, complained of a throat problem. She took a medical opinion and the doctors told her not to worry as she just had a sore throat.
But Kaur’s family said she was haunted by fear of death as she continued to believe that she was suffering from the viral disease, which has killed 109 people in India so far.
Kaur also worried about her children, thinking they will contract the disease from her, informed her family members. She finally consumed celphos, a pesticide, to end her life.
