Hubbali: As colleges resume across the country more cases of students getting with COVID-19 are being reported. In Karnataka’s Dharwad 66 students and some staff of SDM Medical College tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday.
Soon after, the district administration has declared the college hostel as a containment zone.
Most of the students have mild symptoms and they are being treated at their hostel in the college premises near Sattur.
Deputy commissioner, Dharwad, Nitesh Patil said 270 students were tested for COVID-19 of whom 66 tested positive till Thursday morning
Tests of other students and staff have been conducted and measures taken to test all medical staff of the medical college and hospital, he added.
Sources said college had organised a freshers party to welcome first-year MBBS students and the infection is suspected to have spread from there. Students from different states are also studying in the medical college and it is not yet clear how the infection spread to a large number of students, stated report in The New Indian Express.
All students have been vaccinated, said the college authorities but district health department will verify he details.
