Bhubaneswar: Odia singer Jyotirmayee Nayak returned home on Monday to an emotional and jubilant reception at Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar after clinching the title of Indian Idol Season 16.
Eager fans, well-wishers, and supporters gathered with flowers, cheers, and celebrations to welcome the 24-year-old sensation, who brought the prestigious trophy to Odisha.
The victory marks a historic milestone as Nayak became the first contestant from Odisha to win the popular singing reality show. After a nearly 10-month journey that began in September 2025, she outperformed strong finalists including Tanishk Shukla (first runner-up), Manraj Veer Singh, Anshika Chonkar, Myscmme Bosu, and Suhail Sufi in the grand finale aired on July 26. Along with the trophy, she received a cash prize of ₹20 lakh.
A Journey of Talent and Heart
Nayak, a BTech graduate from KIIT School of Computer Engineering and a established name in the Odia music industry with nearly 1,000 recorded songs, impressed judges Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal Dadlani, and Badshah throughout the season. Her standout finale performances, including “Saiyaan O Saiyaan” and renditions like “O Jab Tak Hai Jaan Jaane Jahan Main Nachungi”, which earned a standing ovation from Hema Malini, captivated audiences.
Beyond her vocal prowess, Nayak has dedicated herself to music therapy, regularly singing for cancer patients to provide emotional relief from anxiety, depression, and stress. She has credited the blessings and inspiration from these patients as a driving force behind her success. “Music has the power to heal,” she has often shared, emphasising how her work in hospitals gave deeper purpose to her singing.
Emotional Homecoming and Gratitude
Upon her arrival in Bhubaneswar, an overwhelmed Nayak expressed profound gratitude. “Bringing the Indian Idol Season 16 trophy home to Odisha is an indescribable feeling. This victory belongs to Lord Jagannath, my parents, and every single person who showered me with love and votes,” she said, expressing joy over the happy coincidence of her homecoming with Niladri Bije of the Lords of Shree Jagannath Temple.
She described her journey as one filled with “twists and turns,” urging aspiring artists: “Never give up. Work hard every day, keep practicing your riyaz, and stay faithful — God always rewards sincere effort.”
Congratulatory messages poured in from across Odisha’s political and cultural spheres. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted her achievement as an inspiration for young talents, while other leaders including Naveen Patnaik extended warm wishes.
Looking Ahead
Nayak, daughter of Gauri and Chakradhar Nayak, aims to expand her horizons in playback singing, aspiring to work with Bollywood artists like Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone. Her win not only celebrates her talent but also shines a spotlight on Odisha’s rich musical heritage and the transformative power of music.
