New Delhi: A high-security prison for terrorists will soon be coming up in India.

Construction of the prison, which can accommodate 600 people, is underway in Dambra area of Mahanpur in Jammu & Kashmir’s Kathua district.

“A new jail only for terrorists is being built in Jammu & Kashmir at a cost of Rs 105 crore,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced in Parliament.

Once the high-security facility is ready, it will lodge “treasonous and insurgent criminals.”

Speaking in Parliament on the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) and Reorganisation (Amendment), the Home Minister emphasised Central government’s commitment to eradicating the terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, aiming for zero terror incidents by 2026.

The project was planned by former Director General of Police, Prisons, B Srinivas and current DG Prisons, Deepak Kumar.

The Union Home Minister had personally inspected the site last year.

Currently, there are 14 prisons in J & K, including 2 central jails, 10 district jails, 1 special jail and 1 sub jail. The total capacity of these prisons is 3,629 inmates, but there as many as 5,300 are accommodated presently.
