Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Saturday felicitated Abhijita Mahapatra of Mancheswar in the Odisha capital for fearlessly taking on two motorcycle-borne snatchers.
She received a cash reward of Rs 5,000 and a letter of appreciation for her courageous act from Police Commissioner Satyajit Mohanty and Bhubaneswar DCP Anup Sahu at the Police Commissionerate here.
Commissionerate Police also tweeted about it.
Abhijita fought valiantly and overpowered a chain snatcher at Rasulgarh under Mancheswar police station limits here on Saturday afternoon. The chain snatcher was later handed over to the police.
Reports said that Abhijita Mahapatra of Mayala Vihar area in GGP Colony of Rasulgarh was returning home alone when two criminals came on a bike and tried to snatch a gold chain from her neck. She caught one of them and fought back, also drawing passersby with her shouts for help. As residents rushed to her aid, one of the criminals fled on the bike. The other was caught and subjected to severe thrashing before being handed over to Mancheswar police.
As the woman sustained minor injuries in the scuffle, the police first took her to a nearby hospital for first aid and later dropped her home.
