ABS Mandatory For Two & Four-Wheelers From April 1

All four and two-wheelers will have to be fitted with ABS(Anti-Lock Braking System) from April 1. This is the first step in a series of safety measures being implemented by the central government this year.

ABS is a well-known mechanism that prevents the wheels from locking up under hard braking and helps avoid accidents, especially in slippery road conditions. It also reduces braking distance.

All two-wheelers having engine sizes above 125cc will have ABS as standard and the ones with smaller engines need to be equipped with a combi-braking system (CBS), according to the new directive.

Apart from ABS, the government has decided to mandate a driver-side airbag, speed warning system, seatbelt reminder for driver and co-driver and rear parking sensors from July 1.

Cars will be required to undergo stringent safety standards for full-frontal impact, offset-frontal impact and lateral/side impact from October 1, 2019. New models are already being covered under this rule since October 1, 2017.
