Mumbai: A sessions court here was witness to a rare scene.
Gangster Aizaz alias Ajju Yusuf Lakdawala, who was brought before the special CBI court, carried a bottle of swatted mosquitoes to the court room and requested that he be allowed to use mosquito nets in Taloja central prison where he is lodged.
Lakdawala, a former aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Rajan, is accused in a money-laundering case.
Rajan, who is lodged at Tihar jail in Delhi, appeared in the case through video conferencing.
Lakdawala said that there are too many mosquitoes in prison and there was discrimination as other inmates are being allowed mosquito nets but he was not. Lakdawala added that he had the mosquito net for two years, but jail authorities took it away.
His application was, however, turned down. Special judge AM Patil perused the report filed by the jail superintendent, who submitted that as per chapter 26 rule-17 of Maharashtra Prison Rules, rope and nails cannot be provided to the inmates for tying a mosquito net. Hence, for the safety of inmates, the net cannot be provided.
The Special judge asked Lakdawala that inmates could use Odomos and other natural creams as mosquito repellents.
