Balasore: Banita Rana, who sustained burn injures after being attacked by her husband with acid, succumbed while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack on Sunday.
Banita was the second wife of Chandan Kumar Rana, who worked at a goldsmith’s shop.
According to police sources, Chandan and Banita had a love marriage a little over a month ago. Later, she came to know that Chandan was already married and had two children from his first marriage. Following this, a dejected Banita returned to her parent’s house in Sahadebakhunta.
The incident occurred at Vimpura village under Sadar police station on February 20 when the man came to the house of his father-in-law to take his wife back to his home at Santaragadia in Nilagiri area. As the woman refused to go with him, Rana threw acid at her. Her elder sister, who came to her rescue, also suffered burn injuries. The elder sister’s son and daughter were also injured in the acid attack.
Banita sustained 80 per cent burn injuries and had been battling for life for six days at SCB.
While Chandan is still absconding, police have arrested two other persons for their suspected involvement.
