Lucknow: An MP/MLA court in Uttar Pradesh has handed Raj Babbar a two-year jail sentence.
It’s an old case pertaining to the assault of a polling officer 26 years ago.
An FIR was lodged against the Bollywood actor-turned-politician at Lucknow’s Wazirganj police station on May 2, 1996 by the polling officer.
The Congress leader has been convicted of obstruction of government work and assault, and fined Rs 8,500.
Babbar, who was in the Samajwadi Party at that time and was contesting elections from Lucknow, got into a verbal spat with a polling officer, leading to assault.
A police complaint was filed against Babbar and Arvind Yadav under sections 143, 332, 353, 323, 504, 188 of IPC.
Apart from Representation of the People act, a chargesheet was filed under the Criminal Law Amendment Act.
Babbar was present in court when the verdict was pronounced.
