New Delhi: Days after a series of deadly quakes, another powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit Herat Province of Afghanistan on Sunday morning.
“At this hour, more than 120 injured have been brought to Herat Regional Hospital and many more are taken to other hospitals in the city,” WHO Afghanistan posted on X.
According to European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake jolted western Afghanistan at a depth of 10 km. “A 6.4-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10.0 km jolted northwestern Afghanistan at 03:36:02 GMT on Sunday,” the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said.
A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck western Afghanistan on Wednesday, claiming at least one life and causing panic among residents already traumatised by a series of tremors that killed around 2,000 people at the weekend. Afghanistan had witnessed two magnitude 6.3 powerful earthquakes followed by several strong aftershocks on October 7 that flattened entire villages in Herat province.
Afghanistan is frequently hit by earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountain range, as it lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
