After ‘Dhurandhar’, Assam CM Wants Aditya Dhar To Direct Lachit Borphukan Biopic

New Delhi: After the success of ‘Dhurandhar’, filmmaker Aditya Dhar has received a special request from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The CM has reportedly approached the director with a proposal to make a biopic on Lachit Borphukan, the legendary Ahom general known for his valour and leadership.

The Chief Minister said during a Facebook Live session on Thursday that he had already approached Aditya to discuss the proposed project.

He added that their initial conversation was positive and that Dhar is expected to visit Assam in August for further discussions.

Praising Aditya for the success of ‘Dhurandhar’, he said, “The movie Dhurandhar was a big hit. Aditya Dhar was the director and he is among the best-known names among his contemporaries.”

Explaining why he wants Aditya to helm the project, the CM said he believes a big-budget Hindi film could take Borphukan’s remarkable story and legacy to audiences worldwide.

“I think if our government can produce a film on Lachit Borphukan, we can make his heroics known globally. And, it will be a special achievement for us,” he said.

However, he made it clear that the project would go ahead irrespective of who is ultimately chosen to direct it.

“If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The objective is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made,” he added.

The proposed biopic is part of the Assam government’s larger initiative to bring the stories of the state’s historical icons to the big screen.

The government announced in its 2026–27 budget, presented on July 10, that it would support films chronicling the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar.

For the unversed, Lachit Borphukan was one of Assam’s greatest military commanders, best known for leading the Ahom army to victory over the Mughals in the Battle of Saraighat in 1671.

Remembered for his courage, leadership and unwavering commitment to his people, he remains an enduring symbol of pride in Assam. His legacy is honoured every year on Lachit Divas.
